Dear Bill,
We all know that there are many things in life that get better
with time - things like fine wine, our investment portfolio
(fingers crossed on that one) and Lake Huites. In all seriousness,
I have fished Trophy Bass Lodge on Lake Huites 5 times now and
am amazed how the fishing seems to get better each time.
On my recent trip (Oct. 2005), the fishing was well nigh unto
unbelievable. The fish caught were to best of both worlds -
size and quality. Quality is a subjective thing, meaning different
things to different people. To my way of thinking, quality is
not only about the biggest fish available but by the average
size of the fish caught. During my most recent trip I caught
three fish over 10 pounds in weight ( 10.8, 11.6 and 12.0 pounds).
But even better than this was the great number of fish in the
4 - 5 - 6 pound range. These fish were caught in numbers too
many to easily count. With respect to quantity of fish caught,
I averaged myself better than 100 fish per day. Most days we
didn't even fish all day. This combination of size and numbers
in my opinion can't be beat - anywhere.
These fish were caught on a wide variety of standard bass tactics
- Texas rigs, jigs, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and swimbaits.
The fun part of it all was the topwater bite each morning. Almost
without fail each morning by 9am I caught between 15 - 30 fish
on buzzbaits and other topwater techniques. Some of these fish
went up to 9 pounds in weight - great fun!
Another observation for what it is worth - the fish are found
everywhere. No need to hunt these puppies down. Wherever you
go , you are into the fish. It becomes a question of giving
them what they want.
The enjoyment of Trophy Bass Lodge, in my experience, is not
confined to the fishing. The food and the lodging have been
consistent over five trips and very good. The best thing, however,
is how you are treated by the guides and other staff there.
Imagine being treated as a friend, with people taking an interest
in your trip and the things you need to make that trip special.
Can't put a dollar figure on that. It is like you do not just
visit, you belong.
All these things are found in some sort of combination at other
places. In my experience, they are all found all the time at
Trophy Bass Lodge. For these reasons, I will be back.
All the Best,
Frank Walker
